Ojeshina's pursuit of the Ogun State governorship dates back to 2011, when he stood as a PDP governorship aspirant and emerged 1st runner-up in the primary election. He returned as a PDP governorship aspirant in 2015, drawing on the political network he had built as a former Commissioner for Environment and consultant to the Federal Government.

In June 2022, he emerged as the consensus governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for Ogun State. His candidacy was built around the slogan “Asiwaju ETO” and the campaign message “Re-Invigorating the Awakened Giant.”

Ojeshina ran with Aare Olugbenga Oluyemi, FCA, as his deputy governorship candidate — an accountant with more than 20 years of executive experience in accounting, finance, and procurement, and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

The campaign's manifesto, titled Creating a Model State, centered on industrial growth, energy and infrastructure development, agricultural revival, and freeing Ogun State from dependence on monthly federal allocation by aggressively driving Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

In March 2023, flanked by his running mate and SDP's state deputy chairman, Sola Coker, Ojeshina announced he was stepping down from the governorship race in support of the People's Democratic Party's candidate, Oladipupo “Ladi” Adebutu.
